Salford Red Devils 40 – 14 Catalans Dragons - Sunday 21st July 2019

Monday 22nd July 2019.

Salford Red Devils ran riot in front of our emergency services as they defeated play-off rivals Catalans Dragons 40-14 at the AJ Bell Stadium.

The Red Devils sealed the two-points with six tries, including a brace from Kris Welham in his 300th career appearance and first Salford tries for Tui Lolohea and Josh Johnson, on a day where the club invited the region’s emergency services for a ‘Blue Light’ celebration.

The hosts scored the first try of the afternoon in the 27th minute. Lolohea’s low-kick bounced high and Johnson was able to latch onto it to score on his home debut.

The visitors responded with a try of their own. Two substitutes combined when Sam Kasiano collected a kick from Lucas Albert and score for the Dragons.

Minutes before half-time the Red Devils hit the visitors with two quick tries. Jackson Hastings’ high-kick was spilled by the Catalans defence and as play reset Tyrone McCarthy quickly found Derell Olpherts in the right corner.

Moments later, another high-kick was brilliantly collected under pressure by Kris Welham, who landed over the try line to give Salford an eight-point lead at the break.

Half-time: Salford Red Devils 16-8 Catalans Dragons.

The French side got the second-half underway with a try. Brayden Williame collected the ball 40-metres out and used his pace to dart his way through the Salford defence and score under the sticks.

But once again Ian Watson’s team bounced back brilliantly. Welham now turned provider, as he muscled his way through the Dragons’ front line and was able to break into space and feed the ball to Tui Lolohea for an easy try.

Salford did not stop there. Hastings did what he does best and broke through the Catalans defence, before sending Niall Evalds beneath the posts to give his side a 14-point lead.

Welham scored his second try of the game in the 72nd minute when he latched onto yet another brilliant kick from Lolohea to put the game beyond any doubt for the Red Devils.

Immediately after the restart, Salford scored yet again. Josh Jones found Mark Flanagan who broke through the Catalans defensive line and scored Salford’s sixth try of the afternoon.

Salford Red Devils will look to continue their push for the play-offs when they travel to London and take on the Broncos at Trailfinders Sports Groung in the Super League. Tickets information is available HERE.
